Day 40 – Barack Obama weighs in

It strikes me very funny that so much attention is being paid to President-elect Barack Obama’s feelings on the BCS and his related demand for a playoff system.  One hand, everyone except the executives at ESPN who coincidentally own the rights to air BCS Championships games for the next however many years, are calling for this. Most notably, of course my USC fan brethren, Utah and Texas fans who as Mr. Obama said, “might still have some quibbles,” with the BCS.  It seems as though the only person who has yet to weigh in on the issue is the illustrious Heisman winner from 1968.

The bigger question though, in light of the state of our economy, international crisises most specifically what is happening in Gaza and our own involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, is why the President-elect is bothering himself with something that is not really his jurisdiction in the first place?  Perhaps this might be a very apt project to hand off to former Presidents Clinton and Bush as their disaster relief gig seems to have slowed down these days?  Or maybe Obama can appoint me, in this brief window of being between jobs, to be the Czar/Minister of Anti-BCS campaign – I’ve got a lot of free time on my hands and God knows Obama’s hands are full.

I file this right next to the inordinate amount of time the news media is devoting to what Malia and Sasha Obama are eating for lunch.

Being a big college football fan, I'm glad Obama is sticking up for a playoff and more fairness in college football.

Its not the most important issue in the world, but college football is an American past time and part of a culture that defines us and makes us special as Americans. If this were his only issue, that would be short sided. glad he is able to focus on lots of things and tell it like it is. I also blame the commissioner of the Pac-10 and BIG 10 for preventing a playoff-at least a plus one.
